| What is
a platformgame? Manic Miner (Bug-Byte &
Software Projects) , Jet Set Willy (Software Projects) and Henryīs
Hoard (Alternative Software Systems) are fine
examples of platformgames. A very big problem for me is
when people say that Monty Mole (Gremlin Graphics), Turmoil
(Bug-Byte) and Miner
2049er (Reston Software) are
platformgames. For me they belong to the catagory
"climbing-games" because of the ability to
climb up nīdown ladders. In a platform game you use only
the direction keys plus the jump key and therefore I mean
that if you also can climb ladders up nīdown you must
count them as a climbing game. |
What are the goals in a platform game? Almost in every platform and climbing game you are collecting a certain numbers of gleaming objects and enter an exit. Some games donīt have any exits when you have taken all objects. Instead you finish the game automatic when you take the last object. Many of the these games have also some kind of limits you must check out. Some games have a usual time which count down and when it reach zero you are dead. Manic Miner uses a bar with the text AIR on it so there is a lot of different styles on that. Other games have no time limit at all like Henryīs Hoard and ends instead when you have taken all the objects. |
What platform game is the oldest? For me itīs obvious Bug-Byteīs Manic Miner but if you count Miner 2049er as a platformer we have another game which is made in the same year (both 1983). Maybe there is a platform game on a system not so fameous as the wonderful Speccy which is older than Manic Miner. If you know a platform game which is older than Manic Miner, please email me. |
What kind of dangers lurks in a platform world? In the wonderful
platform world you are confronted with a lot crazy but
also some natural dangers. Some games use some really
weird monsters (sprites) who have nothing in common to
either the games story or the actual name of the screen
and some games vice versa. |
What is a jump and how do I make one? For an example to
come to the other side of a platform you must jump. A
jump is like jumping in the real life but in the world of
Willy there are a lot more of weird hazards to
jump over. |

| - The running jump - |
| The running jump is good to use when you are in a big hurry. Also if you have done hundreds of jumps over bushes and other nasty things you get the feeling how far away you can jump from the danger so itīs also common by experince players as well. |

| - The standing jump - |
| The standing jump is great when you must reach an object which you canīt take reach with a usual jump. With a standing jump I mean that the only key you are using is the jump key. Just stand under that object you want and press the jump key. Beware not to stand under some deadly thing. |

| - The safety jump - |
| The safety jumps are really cool. They are only used when you are unsure if you going to make it. Sometimes you maybe only got one life left and are really near the exit, then itīs the best time to use this jump technique. The first thing you must do before you take the jump is to make Mr Willy ready for it as you can see on the picture. Willy have three frames of animations (see picture below) and that is why itīs quite simple to make out when he is ready for a jump. If you go to the far end of the platform, Willy should have one of his legs out in the air (see picture above). Now you must be quite fast. Just press the jump key and while that direction you want to jump and of he goes. Important is Willy is in the air press the direction key in that the jump key is pressed all time until he has landed safely. |
